Tulsa's
Children's Advocacy Center
The Child Abuse Network,
Inc. is a charter member of the National Children's Alliance (formerly
the national Network of Children's Advocacy Centers). CAN was incorporated
in 1988 and is the first of its kind in the state of Oklahoma.
CAN
is an independent, non-profit corporation funded by community donations
and grants (Federal, State and City). CAN was established by public
and private community service agencies specifically to address
- "system" re-traumatization of child abuse victims
- coordination of services and programs
for child abuse victims and their families
CAN's centralized approach
facilitates seamless communication among the multi-disciplinary
team of agencies that investigate and prosecute child abuse.
CAN is located in a safe, child-friendly facility known as the Justice
Center (Center), which is designed for abused children and the agencies
that are involved in child abuse investigations.
Our History
The
Child Abuse Network was developed in 1986 as a partnership between
- Tulsa County District Attorney's Office
- Tulsa County Sheriff's Office
- Tulsa County Department of Human Services - Child Welfare
- Broken Arrow and City of Tulsa Police Departments
- Tulsa Pediatric Society
- Junior League of Tulsa
In 1988, the Child Abuse
Network was incorporated and funded by the Junior League of Tulsa
as a four-year project. CAN's original offices were located at 15th
Street and Denver. In
1992, CAN moved its offices to the newly completed Justice
Center.
Today,
CAN is governed by a Board of Directors comprised
of

- 2 presidential appointees
- 6 agency representatives
- District Attorney's Office
- Tulsa County Department of Human Services - Child Welfare
